This article shows you how to connect Stripe so clients can pay you online. Clients pay your Stripe account directly. You're the merchant on their statement, and payouts go to your bank. Until Stripe shows Charges enabled, clients who try to buy see that your gym hasn't switched on online payments yet.

Warning: Entering a business name or bank account that doesn't match your tax records can result in Stripe pausing your payouts. Always use the legal name and tax ID registered for your business.

Before you begin#

  • Business details: legal business name, address and tax ID (your EIN, or SSN if you're a sole proprietor).
  • Your details and ID: name, date of birth and home address. Some owners are asked for a photo of their ID.
  • Bank account: routing and account number, or your online banking sign-in.
  • Two-step verification: a phone with an authenticator app or the iPhone Passwords app.
  • About 10 minutes.

Steps#

  1. Go to Settings → Payments.
  2. Read Before you start and set up two-step verification on your phone if you haven't.
  3. Select Set up payments. Stripe's form opens inside your dashboard.
  4. Enter your business details, personal details and bank account.
  5. Choose a Radar fraud-protection plan when asked. Radar Lite has no extra charge on standard Stripe pricing.
  6. Save your Stripe backup code somewhere safe. Stripe only shows it once.
  7. Finish the form. Back on Settings → Payments, check that Charges enabled and Payouts enabled are ticked.

After you connect#

Settings → Payments shows Stripe's tabs:

TabWhat it's for
PaymentsEvery client payment, with refunds and disputes
PayoutsMoney sent to your bank and when
Sales taxStripe Tax registrations and reports
AccountBusiness details, bank account and team access in Stripe

You can also select Open Stripe dashboard ↗ for Stripe's full dashboard.

Common mistakes#

Losing the Stripe backup code#

Without it, replacing your phone can lock you out of Stripe. Store it in a password manager.

Stopping when Stripe asks for more#

If Stripe still needs: shows a list, payments may work but payouts can be held. Finish every item.

Picking a paid Radar plan by accident#

If the plan you want won't select, continue, then change it in Stripe under Settings → Plans and fees → Radar before you take real payments.

Troubleshooting#

  • Does Settings → Payments show Stripe still needs:?
  • Do clients still see that you haven't switched on online payments?

When everything is connected you'll see You're all set — Stripe is connected and you can accept payments.
